Shopify Scripts was launched in 2016 to allow Plus merchants to customize checkout behaviour with Ruby code. In 2024, Shopify announced Scripts would be retired in favor of Shopify Functions — a more powerful, GraphQL-based replacement that runs at the infrastructure level. The retirement date is June 30, 2026.

Custom discounts based on cart contents, customer tags, order history, product combinations, or tiered quantity breaks built with Ruby Scripts. These stop June 30.
Shipping Scripts
Custom shipping rate logic, carrier hiding/showing, free shipping thresholds, or conditional shipping rates built with Scripts. These stop June 30.
Payment Scripts
Hiding, reordering, or conditionally showing payment methods based on cart value, customer attributes, or product types built with Scripts. These stop June 30.
Shopify Functions: More Powerful, But Different
\nShopify Functions is Shopify’s next-generation extensibility framework. Instead of Ruby code running on a hosted Scripts environment, Functions are WebAssembly modules deployed directly into Shopify’s infrastructure — running with sub-millisecond latency at the edge.
\nFunctions are more powerful than Scripts — they support more use cases, run faster, and don’t count against API rate limits. But they require a different tech stack: Rust or JavaScript/TypeScript (compiled to WASM), and deployment via a Shopify app (either a custom app or a third-party Functions-compatible app). This is why most merchants need help migrating.
