Integration guide
EBay and Shopify
Keep selling on eBay and add a store you own. How we build Shopify from your eBay listings and item specifics, run eBay from one Shopify catalog, the eBay rules to respect, and what it costs.

Shopify and eBay: a store of your own, with eBay kept in step from one catalog
A Shopify eBay integration is rarely about leaving eBay. For many sellers eBay is a reliable source of buyers, and it has years of feedback behind it. The problem is that everything lives inside eBay: the listings, the customers, the item specifics, the photos. This guide covers how we build a Shopify store from your eBay listings, how Shopify then becomes the catalog that feeds eBay (and Amazon, if you sell there), the eBay rules that shape what your store can do, and what the project costs.
Why eBay sellers add a Shopify store
- Fees. In most categories eBay charges a final value fee of 13.6 percent of the total sale up to $7,500, plus a per-order fee of 30 or 40 cents, before any promoted listing costs. On a $100 order that is about $14. On your own store the same sale costs the payment processing rate, roughly 3 percent, plus your subscription.
- No customer relationship. eBay allows buyer contact details to be used only for the transaction, and adding a buyer to a mailing list without their consent breaks its rules. Repeat buyers have to find you on eBay again.
- A listing, not a brand. eBay listings cannot link to outside sites and look like every other seller’s. A store gives you your own design, collections, bundles, subscriptions and wholesale.
- Your own search presence. A store on your own domain earns Google rankings you keep, including for your brand name.
- Risk. Account restrictions, payout holds and policy changes happen. A second channel you control spreads it.
How the integration fits together
| Job | Tool | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Build the Shopify catalog from eBay | eBay’s Trading and Inventory APIs, handled by us | Pulls titles, descriptions, item specifics, condition, photos and variations into Shopify products. The Seller Hub download does not carry most of this, which is why we go to the API. |
| Keep eBay in step with Shopify | Shopify Marketplace Connect (built by Shopify, free to install) | Links each Shopify product to its eBay listing and syncs inventory, prices and orders, with shipping and return rules per marketplace. It can also send titles, descriptions and images from Shopify to eBay, and it connects Amazon, Walmart and Target Plus the same way. |
| A simpler route for small catalogs | Third-party apps such as InfoShore’s eBay Integration or CedCommerce | InfoShore imports eBay listings into Shopify and syncs both ways; CedCommerce lists Shopify products on eBay. Useful for small, simple catalogs; we use them where they fit. |
Marketplace Connect is free for the first 50 synced orders each month, then 1 percent of each synced order, capped at $99 a month. It links existing eBay listings rather than recreating them, so your item numbers, watchers and sales history stay on eBay untouched.
What comes out of eBay, and what it takes to get it
eBay retired File Exchange, and the downloads that replaced it in Seller Hub Reports were built for managing listings, not for rebuilding a catalog.
| Data | Where it lives | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Item number, title, variation, custom label (SKU), quantity, price, category, condition | Seller Hub Reports, active listings download | Good for counts and matching. It has no item specifics, no description and no image URLs. |
| Item specifics, description HTML, all photos, variation details | Trading API (GetItem with item specifics requested) | The complete listing as buyers see it. This is our primary source. |
| Custom labels (SKUs) | Your listings | Many eBay sellers never set them. Marketplace Connect matches by SKU, barcode or title, so we assign SKUs to every listing first, on both sides. |
| Feedback | eBay | Stays on eBay. Your store collects its own reviews through a review app from launch; we can quote your eBay feedback score on the store, with a link to your profile. |
| Order history and buyers | Order reports | Not imported as marketing contacts. eBay’s rules limit buyer data to the transaction, so eBay buyers never become store subscribers. |
| eBay store categories and pages | Your eBay store | Rebuilt as Shopify collections and navigation, usually with more structure than an eBay store allows. |
Where eBay and Shopify disagree
Most of the work in an eBay catalog is in the details below. They are the reason a quick app import often looks wrong on the store.
- Variation details. eBay allows up to five variation details per listing and 250 variations. Shopify allows three options per product (and up to 2,048 variants). Listings with four or five details are restructured: the least useful detail becomes a separate product, or moves into the product data where it belongs.
- Item specifics. eBay’s brand, model, material, size type and dozens of category-specific fields become Shopify metafields, so the theme can show them in a specification table and use them as collection filters. On the way back, Marketplace Connect needs the fields eBay requires for each category, so we keep them complete.
- Condition. New, used, refurbished and for parts each mean something on eBay. On Shopify we carry condition as a product field and show it clearly, and set the default condition Marketplace Connect sends to eBay.
- One-of-a-kind stock. Many eBay sellers list single used items. Those sync well with a quantity of one, provided the store and eBay share inventory, so an item sold on eBay disappears from the store within minutes.
- Legacy description HTML. Old eBay templates carry tables, inline styles, external images and sometimes active content eBay no longer allows. We strip them to clean text and structured data, rather than pasting a 2014 listing template into a modern theme.
- Titles. An 80-character eBay title packed with keywords is not a product name. The store gets a short name; the keywords become tags and filters.
- Auctions. Shopify is a fixed-price store. Auction-format listings stay on eBay; fixed-price listings are the ones that sync.
How we run a Shopify eBay integration project
- Listing audit. We download your active listings and pull every listing through the API, then report the catalog’s shape: variation structures, missing SKUs, missing identifiers, categories and conditions, and descriptions that need cleaning.
- Build in a free Shopify development store. Theme, checkout, payments, shipping and taxes. As a Shopify Plus Partner we build in a development store, so you pay Shopify nothing until launch.
- Catalog import. Listings become products with variants, metafields for item specifics, condition, identifiers on the barcode field, and every photo in order.
- Rewrite for a store. Short product names, clean descriptions, collections built from your eBay store categories and item specifics.
- Link, do not relist. Marketplace Connect matches each Shopify product to its live eBay listing. For each field you choose whether eBay’s current value or Shopify’s is kept. Once you switch a field to Shopify’s value, eBay’s original cannot be restored, so we make that choice with you, listing group by listing group.
- Set the sync rules. Price adjustments for eBay (a percentage or fixed amount to cover fees), stock buffers and maximum quantities, shipping services, return policy and condition defaults.
- SEO foundation and launch. Collections, structured data, sitemap, Search Console and Merchant Center. Then launch, and the reconciliation report.
After launch: one catalog, three channels
This is the arrangement we set up for clients who sell on eBay and Amazon as well as their own store. Products are edited in Shopify, and the changes reach the marketplaces without anyone logging in to Seller Hub.
- Stock. A sale anywhere reduces the one inventory figure everywhere.
- Prices. Set in Shopify, with a rule for eBay if its fees need covering.
- Content. Title, description and image edits flow to eBay when listing details sync is on. Image sync can be turned off where your eBay photos are set up differently.
- New products. Created once in Shopify and listed on eBay from Marketplace Connect, with category assignment automatic or chosen by hand.
- Orders. eBay orders arrive in Shopify for fulfillment and reporting, so revenue by product is finally visible across channels.
eBay rules that shape the store
- No offers to sell outside eBay. eBay prohibits using contact details from an eBay transaction to offer sales elsewhere, promoting outside sites in messages, and sending catalogs or anything else that lets a buyer order directly outside eBay. Store discount cards in eBay parcels fall on the wrong side of that rule.
- No links in listings. eBay listings may not link to other sites, even as plain text. Your store address does not go in the description.
- No unsolicited email. Adding eBay buyers to a mailing list without their permission counts as spam under eBay’s contact policy.
- Your store is free to promote itself everywhere else: search, social, email capture on the store, and advertising. That is where the store’s customers come from.
Sales tax and payouts
eBay is a marketplace facilitator: it calculates, collects and remits sales tax on eBay orders in the US states that require it, and US sellers cannot opt out. Your Shopify store does not have that arrangement. Shopify Tax calculates the rate at checkout and tracks your economic nexus by state, but registration and filing are yours, unless you add Shopify’s automated filing. Payouts change as well: instead of eBay’s payouts with fees deducted, store sales settle through Shopify Payments. We set up both before the first order.
Timeline and cost
An eBay catalog of up to 500 listings is typically live on Shopify in five to seven weeks, including the catalog build, a Horizon store design, the channel sync and the tax setup. Projects start at $2,500 for smaller catalogs and $3,500 for larger ones, as a fixed price after the listing audit. Large used-goods catalogs, heavy variation restructuring, custom design or several eBay sites are scoped individually. Payment is 50 percent to begin and 50 percent once the store is live and you are fully satisfied with the figures.
Common mistakes eBay sellers make
- Syncing before every listing has a SKU. Matching by title works until two listings share one.
- Letting a Shopify product relist on eBay as a new item. You lose the watchers and sales history on the original listing.
- Switching title and description to Shopify’s values before the store copy is final. eBay’s originals cannot be brought back.
- Importing legacy listing HTML into the theme unchanged.
- Pricing the store the same as eBay after fees, then offering eBay buyers the difference. The saving should fund the store’s own marketing, not a message to eBay buyers.
- Forgetting identifiers. Marketplace Connect needs a GTIN, UPC, EAN or MPN, or an eBay exemption for private label goods.
What you get at handover
The listing ledger showing every eBay item number against its Shopify product and variant, the variation restructures explained, the item specifics mapping to metafields, the Marketplace Connect configuration documented field by field (which value wins, in which direction), the tax setup, and a recorded walkthrough of editing a product in Shopify and watching the change reach eBay.
Selling on Amazon too? The same catalog feeds it; see our Shopify Amazon integration guide. Handmade sellers should also read the Etsy guide.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to stop selling on eBay to open a Shopify store?
No. The store runs alongside eBay. Shopify Marketplace Connect links your existing eBay listings to Shopify products, so inventory, prices and orders stay in step and your listings keep their history.
Can my eBay listings be imported into Shopify?
Yes. We pull titles, descriptions, item specifics, condition, photos and variations through the eBay API and import them as Shopify products, then clean the copy for a store.
Can I manage my eBay listings from Shopify?
Yes. With Marketplace Connect, stock, prices and listing details edited in Shopify are sent to eBay, and eBay orders arrive in Shopify for fulfillment.
What happens to eBay listings with more than three variation details?
Shopify allows three options per product, while eBay allows five. We restructure those listings, usually by splitting one detail into separate products or moving it into product data.
Can I tell my eBay buyers about my new store?
Not through eBay. Its rules prohibit using transaction contact details to offer sales outside eBay, links in listings, and adding buyers to a mailing list without permission.
What does a Shopify eBay integration cost?
Projects start at 2,500 dollars for up to 500 listings and 3,500 dollars for larger catalogs, including the catalog build, the store and the channel sync. Marketplace Connect is free for 50 orders a month, then 1 percent per order capped at 99 dollars a month.

Your store has to earn its own search traffic.
Rankings on eBay stay on eBay. A Shopify store beside it starts from zero in Google, so once it has been crawled and the first real analytics exist we can measure how it is indexed, where it ranks and who outranks it, audit the tags and speed, and list the quick wins in the order to do them. Here is one we delivered, based on a real engagement.
